Surrey Police: Home Security

Unfortunately there has recently been a burglary in Leatherhead whereby a house window was left open overnight and the thief spotted an opportunity to take a handbag.

Therefore, I thought that this might be an appropriate time to remind everyone to ensure that all windows and doors are locked when you leave your house, even for just a couple of minutes.  Also, if you want to leave a window open overnight make sure it's either a top opening window or a window that you can lock in place so that it cannot be opened any wider to allow a person to get through it.

Before you leave your home to go to work or go on holiday have a quick look around as a burglar would.  Is there anything that you can see from outside that might make your property attractive to burglars?  Do you have any ladders, or tools left out in the garden?  Have you locked all windows and doors and do you have a lock on any outbuildings such as sheds?  Also, when going away for any length of time perhaps let your neighbours know and ask them to call police on 101 if they notice or hear anything suspicious.  If a crime is witnessed please call 999.

We get very few burglaries in Mole Valley and with your help we can keep it that way.

Planning ensures another success at the Investec Derby Festival

Months of planning and preparation have paid off after another Investec Derby Festival is hailed a success. Around 125,000 race-goers enjoyed a safe and secure two-day festival after Surrey Police and partner agencies assisted Epsom Downs Racecourse Limited with the prestigious event. The weekend began on Ladies Day (Friday, 5 June) and concluded with today's Investec Derby Day which is attended each year by thousands of spectators and viewed by millions throughout the world, making it one of the most important dates in the sporting calendar. Police officers and police staff provided support to the large number of professional stewards and private security staff to ensure the event passed without major incident. By 6.10pm five arrests had been made – a very small number given the size of the crowd. The arrests were for two drugs offences, two public order offences and one arrest for an offence un-related to the event (wanted by another police force). Plans put in place, included traffic which involved officers from roads policing working in conjunction with Highways Agency, council parking enforcement and support from contractors to tow away any obstructing vehicles. Superintendent Jon Savell, said: "The Investec Derby Festival is a huge event which requires extensive planning every year, with this year being no different. "The weather stayed dry throughout the event which helped ensure race-goers were treated to two very enjoyable days of racing. "Officers will continue to have an increased presence in the Epsom area this evening to ensure people get home safely and any disruption to local residents is kept to a minimum. "I must commend the race organisers for their continued commitment to safety throughout the day and the thorough planning that goes into the festival. I would also like to thank all police officers and staff for their significant efforts, not only today but during the months of preparation prior to the event.” - See more at: http://www.surrey.police.uk/News/News-Stories/Full-news-story/Article/11376/Planning-ensures-another-success-at-the-Investec-Derby-Festival#sthash.MpBsRYrY.dpuf

Are you planning ahead for Saturday 1 August and Sunday 2 August 2015?
Prudential RideLondon: an annual two-day festival of cycling:
A true legacy of the 2012 Games
Developed by the Mayor of London and his agencies, Prudential RideLondon is a world-class festival of cycling. The third edition will take place over the weekend of Saturday 1 August and Sunday 2 August 2015.
While the Mayor and his agencies are the custodians of Prudential RideLondon, the event is managed by the London & Surrey Cycling Partnership (LSCP), a partnership between London Marathon Events Limited (owners and operators of the London Marathon since 1981) and SweetSpot Group Limited (operators of the Tour of Britain).
With LSCP, Transport for London (TfL) and London & Partners (the Mayor’s official promotional organisation) coordinate the significant technical requirements for the event and work in partnership with London Boroughs, Surrey County Council, The Royal Parks, London Legacy Development Corporation and British Cycling, who are each integral to the delivery of the event.
This flagship event is part of the Mayor and TfL’s cycling programme. This includes a cycle-hire scheme and network of cycle superhighways across London, providing easy and secure cycle parking and wayfinding and investment in cycling in outer London via the Biking Boroughs programme, as well as working with London Boroughs to deliver child and adult cycling training courses.
Prudential RideLondon provides a fantastic platform to help fulfil The Mayor and TfL’s goal of encouraging more people to cycle more safely, more often. TfL anticipates tens of thousands of spectators and participants every year will take up regular cycling after each event. This will be achieved by creating massive engagement with participants, spectators and media alike.
There is no other closed-road event like it that combines the fun and accessible element of a free family ride in central London with the excitement of watching the world’s best professional cyclists race in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic and Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix.
Taking a cue from the London Marathon, amateur cyclists also participate in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 – a 100-mile challenge on the same closed roads as the professionals, with the added incentive of raising money for good causes. To capture it all, the best action is broadcast live on TV in the UK and internationally, to be seen by an audience of millions.
Prudential RideLondon also generates sustainable, long-term economic benefit to London and the UK alongside the money raised for good causes; as participants and spectators alike come to London both from the UK and overseas to spend their time and money in the capital.
After the inaugural event in 2013, the vision for Prudential RideLondon – to be one of the world’s leading cycling events and a lasting legacy of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games – has become reality.

Prudential RideLondon Volunteers Required

Prudential RideLondon have been in contact as they are looking for volunteers to help with this year’s events. If you think your residents may be interested in getting involved I would be most grateful if you could pass on this information. They have also supplied a poster which I attach and some text you may wish to use which is in blue below.

There is also a competition to win a top of the range carbon Verenti bike.

Prudential RideLondon is into its 3rd year and this year’s event is bigger & better. On Sunday 2 August, approximately 27,000 riders will participate in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, cycling 100 miles from the start in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, out into Surrey and then back to London to a spectacular finish on the Mall. Finally, 150 of the world's top professional cyclists - including our own Mark Cavendish - will race on an extended route from QEOP, out into Surrey and back to London and The Mall in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic.

Prudential RideLondon is looking for people to get involved in a variety of roles from being a yellow flag marshal for the professional race to handing out spectator guides & ensuring the safety of both riders and spectators alike.

Volunteers can choose a shift location and time at www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/volunteers. Training is also provided and a suitable date can be chosen on the website.

All volunteers will receive a t-shirt, cap, water bottle, bag and lunch - and the chance to be involved in something amazing.
