Olympic Parking

As part of the road cycling road races weekend Mole Valley District Council are organising temporary car parks in four places around the district to provide parking for the visitors coming to watch this Olympic event.

Teazle Wood

Dear All

As you are aware, we recently achieved the major step of exchanging contracts on both parts of Teazle Wood (known at the recent Barnard Marcus auction as Lots 59A and 59B).

Successful completion on Lot 59A (containing the block of Ancient Woodland) is looking good, BUT we still need to raise funds for 59B (59B is where the newt ponds are, and it is the part of the woodland most used by adjacent schools and local people. It is next to Tesco, and it needs a great deal of work; some of you will know this as the area we focused on for the community "Big Tidy Up" litter pick in 2010).

WE NOW NEED TO URGENTLY CONVERT YOUR GENEROUS PLEDGES INTO DONATIONS.

A book of donations is being kept, and any anonymous donations are being allocated names of flora and fauna from the woodland - Badger, Nightingale, Fox, Owl, Woodpecker, Bluebell, Purple Emperor, Honeysuckle, Green Hound's-tongue and Great Crested Newt are already taken, but Toad and Black Medick are up for grabs! (There are thousands, and it's a nice way of increasing awareness of the incredible biodiversity of the site - get in touch if you want to choose).

SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE ASKED IF THEY CAN MAKE THEIR DONATIONS IN MEMORY OF LOVED ONES OR IN THE NAMES OF THEIR CHILDREN - OF COURSE YOU CAN (I AM). ALL THIS WILL BE BEAUTIFULLY RECORDED FOR POSTERITY.

I am also attaching a bit of a "wake up call". I have sent a lot of images of stag beetles, bluebells, sunsets through oak trees, paintings by ex-servicemen, etc. Many people who don't know this area have asked why I think the woods need help - this is my visual answer. This is Surrey. There are good bits, of course, but this is the disturbing reality and something that we all need to wake up to and take responsibility for. We need to act, and win the chance to care for this precious environment and put right the neglect.

We have a lot to do - let's do it!

Olympic Cycling - Travel Plans

It has taken several phone calls and emails to Surrey County Council in Kingston for me to extract this info – so I hope this precious, time-consuming information will be of use to you!

 

The route through Surrey goes from Hampton Court, via Brooklands, West Byfleet, Pyrford, Ripley, West Horsley, East Clandon, Shere, Gomshall, Westcott, Dorking, Box Hill, Leatherhead, Oxshott, Esher and returning to Hampton Court, continuing into London (see map on website:  http://www.gosurrey.info/assets/documents/road-race-map-with-dates – takes several minutes to download).

 

This route is due to be closed on Saturday 28^th and Sunday 29^th July from 4.00 am until 21.00.  Rumour has it that it may not re-open over Saturday night in places.  The races are due between 12.45 and 15.30.  Therefore if you are landlocked inside the loop, the only “escape routes” that I have been informed of are the A3 and Junction 10 of the M25, (where I expect half of Surrey will be queuing to drive out!).  If you can face the crowds on the trains, you can try travelling by rail.  If you want to cross on foot, there will be pedestrian crossings, open until about 12.00 and from 15.30 (these are the times for Oaklawn Road in Leatherhead, they will be earlier in Dorking).

 

If, like us, you have an unavoidable appointment (we are due for a 60^th birthday gathering in Sussex on Sunday), you may like to plan ahead and drive out of the loop on the Friday evening beforehand, park the car somewhere safe and then walk across on your exit day in order to continue your “escape”.

 

The Olympic ticketholders are being advised to arrive at Dorking station and then walk up to an hour to their seats at Box Hill, also allowing time for the airport-style security checks (no liquids allowed, etc).

 

I hope this information is useful.  Please let me know if you have any updates, as this is only correct as far as I have been informed by Surrey County Council Olympic Cycling information department.

I have been told today of two sets of roadworks that will involve major road closures. The details are on the Surrey County Council website and I provide links below. They are:

1. A24 Leatherhead Bypass 11th June to 16th June.

2. Kingston Road, Leatherhead 1st August to 12th September

The Presentation on the Olympic Road Cycling Road Race at 8.00 pm follows the LRA's AGM (17.30 - 8.00); both meetings are in the Abraham Dixon Hall of the Leatherhead Institute.

Please note that there are no meetings of the LRA scheduled for earlier in May and the next Open Committee Meeting will be on Monday June 11th (June 4th being a Bank Holiday).

Surrey Police: Home Security

We have noticed an increase in attemted break ins due to the unseasonably hot weather where residents are opening their windows to let in the cool air and forgetting to close them or lock back doors when they go out.

Could I ask you to impress on your neighbours the importance of ensuring that their homes are secure which means closing and locking all windows and doors when leaving the house.  Also, if you leave a window open when you go to bed please ensure that it has a locking mechanism to ensure that it cannot be opened wide enough to allow anyone to gain entry while you are asleep.

Surrey Police: Sheds

Don't lose a shed load
SURREY Police is running a campaign to raise awareness of thefts from sheds and is giving advice to residents on how to protect their property from thieves.
Although you might not think your shed is worth much, when you consider the lawnmower; the bike; the power tools; the golf clubs; the tennis rackets; the ladder; and the barbeque, they all add up.
By taking a few simple measures such as marking your property and getting a shed alarm padlock you could reduce the likelihood of being targeted.
As part of the campaign Surrey Police and Eagle Radio (96.4FM) will be running three road shows; on Saturday 24 March in Guildford - Town Bridge; Saturday 31 March in Staines - High St; and Saturday 14 April in Leatherhead - High St.
For the chance to obtain a free shed alarm padlock, residents can take a photo of their shed on a phone or camera and bring it to one of the roadshows. For more details on the roadshow and security advice please visitwww.surrey.police.uk/sheds
Chief Superintendent Gavin Stephens from Surrey Police Neighbourhood Command said: "In recent years we have seen a rise in thefts from sheds and garages in the lead up to the summer. Leatherhead & District ForumSpecial Meeting - All Welcome

On 29th February at 5.30 in Park House (in the Red House grounds) there will be a special meeting of the Leatherhead & District Forum.

First, Tim Caffell and Colin Langley will tell us about the theatre and its plans for the future. They will also ask us what we might want the theatre to do and how we might help.

Then Chris Wade, Chief Executive of Action for Market Towns, will speak about the achievements of communities in market towns in the UK, and the theme of his talk is "Know Your Place"

All are welcome to this meeting. Parking is in the Randalls Road Car Park and Park House is situated at the top corner of the Car Park, fairly close to the Bull Hill pedestrian entrance.

Pitstop Concert February 24th 7.30pm

This event will be held at the Letherhead Institute on Friday evening.

It features performances from friends, clients & staff from Pitstop.

Dorking Leisure Centre Consultation

Dear All

 

The Council owns Dorking Sports Centre, Reigate Road, Dorking and currently runs it through a leisure operator. The current contract with Leisure Connection will expire in November 2013. We are inviting your views on the much loved Centre and the facilities that it offers before the contract goes out to tender. James Friend, Leader of the Council, has specifically asked that you be invited to complete this survey, which will now be live until 6 March. We'd appreciate it if you could forward the survey on to your contacts, as we're keen that as many people as possible get the opportunity to have their say.

Another Scam Warning

From Ashtead Residents:


"Just a warning for Ashtead residents, I have just had letters supposedly
from Hung Pang of Kexim Asia offering me a 50% share of £10.5M. It is a
typical phishing attempt to try to get bank details - this time on paper
instead of as an email. I assume someone is working through the Ashtead
phone book since I have two numbers listed under 2 names and had letters
addressed to both.

Please pass this on - especially to older people who may not be so familiar
with phishing on the internet!"

Surrey Police: Sheep Attack

A warning to all Country Watch member in and around the Headley, Walton and Langley Vale area. Between the hours of 5pm on 18/02/2012 and 6am on 19/02/2012 a number of Sheep in Langley vale were attacked and mauled by a dog. Some of the attacked sheep required euthanising due to injuries.

To all dog owners in the area please ensure the safety of your dog and livestock by keeping the dog secure in your garden or premises or on a lead at all times when out walking.
