With the help and generosity of many philanthropic, forward-thinking people, we have today completed the purchase of BOTH parts of Teazle Wood.

Please keep fund-raising - several people have lent money to make this once seemingly impossible task a reality, and we must work hard to pay them back.

Teazle Wood Update from Lucy Quinnell

Hi everyone

Just to let you know that the campaign is going very well indeed. The support from the local residential and business community (and indeed from further afield - a donation was made yesterday from Australia) has been a wonderful thing to experience. Thanks are owed to many (you know who you are), and I look forward to sharing the whole story further down the line.

I'm also writing to tell you that the Woodland Trust has been incredibly supportive this week, and Teazle Wood has become one of their WOODWATCH featured woodlands. Many thanks to Alice Farr and her colleagues at the Woodland Trust for their help and hard work. Take a look:

The almost magical, mystical quality of woods makes them a great place for relaxation and recreation. A walk in the woods can give anyone a feeling of peace and tranquility. Most of us have fond childhood memories of playing on or around trees.

A world without trees and woods would be barren and bare.

Olympic Travel in London

The final preparatory works on the Olympic Route Network (ORN) are underway this weekend, so London’s road network will look and feel very different by Monday morning. The ORN and Games Lanes restrictions will be apply from 0600 Wednesday 25 July. To watch a short video explaining how the ORN and Games Lanes work, please click here Olympic Route Network (ORN) explained The ORN is a road network linking Games venues and other key sites. Normal traffic can use most of the ORN, although there will be temporary changes such as suspended turns, stopping and loading restrictions and changes to traffic signal timings. Stopping or parking on the ORN will result in a £130 penalty charge and your vehicle may be towed away. Games Lanes Some lanes on ORN roads will be reserved as Games Lanes and are for use by athletes, officials and the world’s media. The vast majority of Games Lanes are in outside lanes. In these cases, normal traffic can use the adjacent lane(s). Driving in a Games Lane will result in a £130 penalty charge. When you can use Games Lanes Games Lanes will be very busy. They will be for the use of Games vehicles only from 0600–midnight. If Games Lanes are less busy, they will be switched off and electronic signs will indicate that normal traffic can use them. Olympic Torch Relay The Olympic Flame will be visiting every Borough in London this week. Roads will be temporarily closed before it arrives and will be exceptionally busy, particularly on Thursday 26 July. As many will know, contracts have been signed. Grateful thanks to all Friends of Teazle Wood who have generously donated or pledged.

Whilst the largest piece of land is secure, £90,000 is still needed for the smaller piece of the wood. (If most of the people of Leatherhead donated £9, this amount would be met!) We have until July 31st to secure this.

All donations welcome. Could you please pass this on to anyone who may be able to help.

Closure Kingston Rd Possible

Kingston Road closure due to replacement of gas mains - there will be possible closures of Kingston Road at the railway bridge so that essential gas main replacement can be carried out from 2nd August to 4th September. Diversions will be in place but there will be inevitable disruption and delays

News Digest

Community groups are able to bid for a grant from a fund of £350,000. The Community Improvement Fund aims to help local organizations and bids between £10,000 and £50,000 can be made up to 28th September. See www.surreycc.gov.uk/communityimprovementfund for information

  

Mole Valley has come in 38th place out of 324 local authority districts as the best place to live in England & Wales

  

Wildlife Aid Foundation in Randalls Road has re-scheduled its open day to 4th August.

The famous Duck Race which took place on the River Mole on Sunday 24th June raised over £2000 for the Festival Committee and will provide valuable funds for the Christmas celebrations in the town.

Leatherhead Library is closed temporarily for maintenance and improvements until 14th July

Olympic Parking

As part of the road cycling road races weekend Mole Valley District Council are organising temporary car parks in four places around the district to provide parking for the visitors coming to watch this Olympic event.

Teazle Wood

Dear All

As you are aware, we recently achieved the major step of exchanging contracts on both parts of Teazle Wood (known at the recent Barnard Marcus auction as Lots 59A and 59B).

Successful completion on Lot 59A (containing the block of Ancient Woodland) is looking good, BUT we still need to raise funds for 59B (59B is where the newt ponds are, and it is the part of the woodland most used by adjacent schools and local people. It is next to Tesco, and it needs a great deal of work; some of you will know this as the area we focused on for the community "Big Tidy Up" litter pick in 2010).

WE NOW NEED TO URGENTLY CONVERT YOUR GENEROUS PLEDGES INTO DONATIONS.

A book of donations is being kept, and any anonymous donations are being allocated names of flora and fauna from the woodland - Badger, Nightingale, Fox, Owl, Woodpecker, Bluebell, Purple Emperor, Honeysuckle, Green Hound's-tongue and Great Crested Newt are already taken, but Toad and Black Medick are up for grabs! (There are thousands, and it's a nice way of increasing awareness of the incredible biodiversity of the site - get in touch if you want to choose).

SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE ASKED IF THEY CAN MAKE THEIR DONATIONS IN MEMORY OF LOVED ONES OR IN THE NAMES OF THEIR CHILDREN - OF COURSE YOU CAN (I AM). ALL THIS WILL BE BEAUTIFULLY RECORDED FOR POSTERITY.

I am also attaching a bit of a "wake up call". I have sent a lot of images of stag beetles, bluebells, sunsets through oak trees, paintings by ex-servicemen, etc. Many people who don't know this area have asked why I think the woods need help - this is my visual answer. This is Surrey. There are good bits, of course, but this is the disturbing reality and something that we all need to wake up to and take responsibility for. We need to act, and win the chance to care for this precious environment and put right the neglect.

We have a lot to do - let's do it!

Olympic Cycling - Travel Plans

An Olympic tale from one of the members:

It has taken several phone calls and emails to Surrey County Council in Kingston for me to extract this info – so I hope this precious, time-consuming information will be of use to you!

 

The route through Surrey goes from Hampton Court, via Brooklands, West Byfleet, Pyrford, Ripley, West Horsley, East Clandon, Shere, Gomshall, Westcott, Dorking, Box Hill, Leatherhead, Oxshott, Esher and returning to Hampton Court, continuing into London (see map on website:  http://www.gosurrey.info/assets/documents/road-race-map-with-dates – takes several minutes to download).

 

This route is due to be closed on Saturday 28^th and Sunday 29^th July from 4.00 am until 21.00.  Rumour has it that it may not re-open over Saturday night in places.  The races are due between 12.45 and 15.30.  Therefore if you are landlocked inside the loop, the only “escape routes” that I have been informed of are the A3 and Junction 10 of the M25, (where I expect half of Surrey will be queuing to drive out!).  If you can face the crowds on the trains, you can try travelling by rail.  If you want to cross on foot, there will be pedestrian crossings, open until about 12.00 and from 15.30 (these are the times for Oaklawn Road in Leatherhead, they will be earlier in Dorking).

 

If, like us, you have an unavoidable appointment (we are due for a 60^th birthday gathering in Sussex on Sunday), you may like to plan ahead and drive out of the loop on the Friday evening beforehand, park the car somewhere safe and then walk across on your exit day in order to continue your “escape”.

 

The Olympic ticketholders are being advised to arrive at Dorking station and then walk up to an hour to their seats at Box Hill, also allowing time for the airport-style security checks (no liquids allowed, etc).

 

I hope this information is useful.  Please let me know if you have any updates, as this is only correct as far as I have been informed by Surrey County Council Olympic Cycling information department.

I have been told today of two sets of roadworks that will involve major road closures. The details are on the Surrey County Council website and I provide links below. They are:

1. A24 Leatherhead Bypass 11th June to 16th June.

2. Kingston Road, Leatherhead 1st August to 12th September
