Edmund Tylney 20% Discount offer

Attached to the Summer Newsletter, members will have found the special offer of 10% discount from 27th July until 12th August and various business listed. I am pleased to inform members that Gregory Giles, the new manager of the the Edmund Tylney (the Wetherspoon's pub on the High Street), has emailed the chair of our Publicity & Membership Subcommittee the following:
---------------------------------------------------------

I am not sure what was previously agreed by the departing manager of our business but as the new manager I would like to offer all Leatherhead Residents' Association members 20% discount on all food bills excluding those deals which already include a free drink as part of their promotion.

As responsible retailers we are unable to offer targeted discounts on drinks purchases. The 20% discount on food is available to all your members with immediate effect on production of appropriate identification of membership to our staff and will continue until you or I request otherwise. This will extend to any single member who has up to three non-member guests in their party, so family and friends of our local association are not excluded!

Please Help Save Teazle Wood

As many will know, contracts have been signed. Grateful thanks to all Friends of Teazle Wood who have generously donated or pledged.

Whilst the largest piece of land is secure, £90,000 is still needed for the smaller piece of the wood. (If most of the people of Leatherhead donated £9, this amount would be met!) We have until July 31st to secure this.

All donations welcome. Could you please pass this on to anyone who may be able to help.

Why save Teazle Wood?:
• Last sizable block of woodland in Leatherhead teaming with wildlife • It forms a wildlife corridor between Bookham and Ashtead • Is a well loved green space for people of Leatherhead • Is a proven educational resource for local people and schools
• Has therapeutic value for Combat Stress and Queen Elizabeth's Foundation • it has historical and archaeological significance • it is the home of many rare and endangered species • After being neglected for years it deserves the gentle management that numerous
groups would love to give it

Please send cheques now payable to: "Friends of Teazle Wood" to Lucy Quinnell, Rowhurst Forge, Oxshott Rd, Leatherhead, Surrey KT22 0EN.
Please include name: address, telephone number, e- mail, & whether you would like to remain anonymous or whether you are happy to be named (amounts will not be disclosed unless you'd like. Receipts will be given) To follow on facebook: Friends of Teazle Wood

Music on Thursdays – Lunchtime Concerts in Leatherhead

Starting: 8th March 2012 and every Thursday until November

Music on Thursdays, a season of free lunchtime concerts, runs from 8th March, every Thursday until November. Concerts start at 12.30pm and last 40-50 minutes.

Parish Church Master of Music, Graham Davies commented: “We have invited a selection of musicians to perform in Leatherhead. They include local musicians, professionals from further afield, and Royal Academy of Music students – quite an array of talent.”

The first concert in the Church, on March 8th, features Royal Academy students Midori Komachi, violin, with accompanist Carlos Guerrero. The following week sees performances by musicians from St John’s School, Leatherhead.

After that comes the first monthly organ concert using the both church’s digital organ and the historic 17thC Parker pipe organ.

As the season continues we hear a bassoon ensemble, solo singers, a pair of tubas, and combinations of string and wind instruments.
We're attaching a poster which shows the first three months or this year's programme. Please do forward this to friends. If you have a place to display the poster that would be a lovely way to support the venture.
There is level access to Leatherhead Parish Church, and toilet facilities in the church hall. Entry to concerts is free. Contributions to help cover costs will be welcome.
Organiser: Graham Davies, Master of Music, Leatherhead Parish Church
Publicity: Frances Presley & Peter Steadman
Leatherhead Parish Church is registered as a charity in England & Wales No. 1132607.

THE LETHERHEAD INSTITUTE CELEBRATES 120 YEARS SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY IN 2012

The Letherhead Institute at the top of the High Street was built in 1892 and given to the people of Leatherhead by local benefactor Abraham Dixon of Cherkley Court. Next year sees the commemoration of 120 years providing educational, social and recreational facilities within this beautiful Victorian building.

Amazingly the Institute had already been there for 5 years when Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee and it will be bedecked again next year to mark the Diamond Jubilee of our own Queen Elizabeth II.

The festivities on 19 May will include an invitation for all the Leatherhead Community to come and see what’s inside the building; a special feature will be an exhibition including pictures and artefacts from 1897 - Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Year.

Do you have any Victorian memorabilia or photographs which you would be prepared to lend for the exhibition? We’d be delighted to hear from you at LCA2 AT btconnect DOT com or please write to:

Olympic Test Event Final Drop-In Session

Dear All

This is just a reminder that the final drop-in session for the Olympic Cycle race test event on Sunday 14 August is happening this Friday - 29th July at Park House in Leatherhead. The session runs from 3pm to 8pm and is an opportunity for anyone to pop in and ask questions about road closures, crowd management, footpaths, access or whatever is of interest/concern to residents and/or businesses. Representatives from the District Council (me!), the County Council, Transport for London and LOCOG should be there.

Please do encourage as many people as possible to come in and ask any questions they may have. For those who cannot make it, Surrey County Council have a dedicated website for the Olympic Games at www.gosurrey.info which contains a wealth of information and there is some more generic information, including information on how to volunteer for next year's races, on the District Council website. Please follow this link:

These pages will be updated and added to as we move forward towards the main events next year.

Tickets for Zig-Zag

Dear All

This is to let you know that Mole Valley District Council has been allocated 460 tickets for residents to watch the London-Surrey Cycle Classic from the coveted zig-zag area on Box Hill. We will be allocating a small number to Headley Court and the rest will be available for residents to apply for through a competition.

The competition goes live tomorrow at approximately 12 noon (possibly slightly earlier). It will be online at www.mole-valley.gov.uk and hard copy forms will be available at the Leatherhead HelpShop and Pippbrook reception. Terms and Conditions apply. The closing date is 12 noon on 27 July, after which time winners will be picked from all correct entries, where Terms and Conditions have been agreed to and contact details supplied.

Please encourage your residents to apply, as long as they are willing to commit to coming and recognise that it is a long walk from the station or a car park to the zig-zag area!

Kind regards

Public Art Project in Early Stages in Leatherhead - Have your say

Contributions to 106 Developer Funds have resulted in a £49000 budget for a Public Art Project to be located in or near the Leatherhead Town Centre. In fact, this money can only be used for Public Art. However, a very inclusive description has been used in defining the end project. For example, not only can a statue or other aesthetically beautiful object qualify for consideration but the presentation of a beautiful combination of landscape design incorporating art, nature and street furniture would be appropriate. Projects that are both utilitarian and beautiful, stimulating, or evocative are under consideration.

Do you have any ideas for Public Art. Please contact Cheryl Allen, member of the Public Art Committee and representative of the LRA to the LAP.

Click here to email Cheryl or phone her on (0137)2 370 091.

The deadline for submissions is 19th March. Selected projects will be presented at two public forums:
  • 21st April at Park House 4 to 8 p.m.
  • 24th April in the Swan Centre

Support Polesden Lacey Shakespeare

A New Beginning

The works of Shakespeare have been performed, since 1951, in the Open Air Theatre at the National Trust property Polesden Lacey, near Bookham in Surrey. The theatre was created in the grounds of this country mansion through the work of the Bookham Community Association. Performances of Shakespeare’s plays have been part of the summer festival under the umbrella of the National Trust. A new company, Polesden Lacey Shakespeare, has been formed to carry on this tradition. The National Trust continues support for our future plans but we need to find extra funding to help us progress our activities.

This year we present ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ on Saturdays 11th and 18th July and Sundays 12th and 19th July starting at 3pm. The production is directed and adapted by Margaret Hunter to make it accessible to all audience members young or old, with entertainment before and during the interval. Dorking Hall Box Office (01306 881717) have kindly agreed to act as our booking agency. Sale of tickets will commence on 2 April. Further information is available on www.polesden.co.uk.

What would we like you to do?

We have obtained an amount of funding but would of course welcome further support. A team of local professionals have been drawn together to prepare for the productions not only from the artistic but also the commercial point of view. We would like to grow the strength of Polesden Lacey Shakespeare to provide, in these idyllic surroundings, Shakespeare for audiences from the local community, London and the South East.

Last year the National Trust launched the Friends of Polesden Lacey Shakespeare. We have now taken it over from the Trust and are inviting public help to build the future of this much loved local tradition. We have taken over the website that was used for the festival and invite those interested in becoming a Friend to ring 01372 453638 or visit www.polesden.co.uk, for a joining form.

Whatever you choose to do, we do hope you will come and enjoy this enchanting play in the glorious surroundings of Polesden Lacey.

With all best wishes from
Margaret Hunter and Polesden Lacey Shakespeare
